Istanbul is a city of sultans and soldiers. In the shadow of the palaces and aqueducts, and undisturbed, by the rise and fall of empires, the people of the city have steadily kept up their cooking, partying, shouting and sailing about in boats.

In a city this ancient, time seems to move through people rather than the other way around.  So, when it all gets too much, close your guide book and let the greatness of the city whirl around you.  Besides, it is sometimes much more fun to explore the streets in between the famous mosques and monuments.
